What is nearshoring?

Nearshoring consists of relocating production facilities or supply chains to countries closer to the final destination.

  • BBVA Research seeks to answer two questions. First, how has the degree of concentration in our exports evolved in two dimensions: product and destination since 2018? Second, how does the current nearshoring process relate to export diversification in these two dimensions?
  • On October 11, the Mexican government issued a decree granting tax incentives to key sectors of the export industry consisting of the immediate deduction of the investment in new fixed assets and the additional deduction of training expenses.
  • BBVA Research and the Mexican Association of Private Industrial Parks (AMPIP) conduct a survey to quantify and anticipate the effects of nearshoring in Mexico. Results confirm companies' interest in operating in Mexico and anticipate a greater arrival of companies in the next two years.
  • Human capital formation faced great challenges prior to the pandemic; it is likely that conditions have worsened with COVID-19; in this sense, it is necessary to prioritize and strengthen the educational system. There can be no nearshoring in the medium and long term without investment in human capital.

  • We are introducing our NS Banks Monitor, with which we will be tracking the nearshoring dynamics in the banking industry, with a focus on loans to the non-financial business sector (NFBS).

    This new dashboard aims at becoming a tool to get a deeper understanding of lending to the private non-financial business sector and is part of our efforts to enhance our research of the industry and its broader role in fostering economic activity and impact on specific industries.

  • In our last update dated 26 June 2023 we identified a series of indicators that we thougth would be useful to track to give an integral perspective around this matter. 

    Since then, we have added a new key indicator, which will allow us to see how the dynamics observed in different external sector indicators translate into domestic growth. In this document we note that most indicators remain unchanged, six months since our first edition, an while exports have improved, so has the political noise, which we see as more relevant and negative.
